We monitor the news, it is important to know what is that which most affects our country. The latest is calamity brought about by typhoon Frank. Until now, the Catholic Church is asking for donations and second collection for those that were ravaged by the typhoon to help them get back on track. Let us be generous.
Secondly, the population issue is really being highlighted these days. With the latest comment from Health Secretary Alberto Romualdez calling on lawmakers not to compromise with the Catholic bishops. He contends that population control is not an issue that the Church should interfere with. "That is a social and economic policy, which is purely the business of the government." (PDI, July 20, 2008)
Sec. Romualdez doesn't know what he is saying. More than social or economic policy, it is a religious and moral issue, because the future of humanity in God passes by way of the family. Only God allows or prohibits a generation to flourish or end. Population is the domain of the great Creator. Humankind's role is to facilitate the growth of God's creation, not hinder it. Romualdez' view is purely secularistic, denying God himself the right over the creation of his people.
The medical field is supposed to be for the sick. I wonder if pregnancy is considered a sickness. If it is not, why mutilate a particular body part? If a person is not sick, then it is not the secretary's domain. His office should insure that people are healthy, not interfering with God's designs.
Let it be clear the Church is also for responsible family planning and management. But not at the extreme of direct and immoral interventions against life and morals. If the government approves a two-children policy, what will they do with the third child? Thoughts of abortion is not far away. The politicians are threading on dangerous grounds, especially that which belongs to God alone.
We'll tackle other Philippine issues in our next blog. Please hold on.
